How Often Should You Clean and Disinfect a Water Tank?

A clean tank means clean water for your family. Even the best tank needs regular cleaning because sediment builds up over time.

However strong and well waterproofed your tank is, sediment and silt from water trucks or the mains settle at the bottom over time. Regular cleaning and disinfection are an essential part of protecting your family’s health.

How often should you clean the tank?

The common recommendation is every 6 to 12 months. Clean it sooner if

  • You rely heavily on water trucks, since the water source changes each time.
  • You notice a change in the colour, taste or smell of the water.
  • You see sediment or particles in water from the taps.
  • The tank has not been cleaned for a long time, or you bought an older home with an unknown history.

What does proper cleaning involve?

  1. Draining the tank and removing sediment from the floor.
  2. Cleaning the walls and floor with tools that will not scratch the internal lining.
  3. Disinfecting with products intended for drinking-water tanks, at the correct concentration.
  4. Rinsing thoroughly so no disinfectant residue remains.
  5. Inspecting the tank and checking the lid, vent and float valve.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Entering the tank yourself without equipment. An underground tank is a confined space that may have low oxygen or disinfectant fumes.
  • Using household cleaners or products not intended for drinking water.
  • Using sharp tools or wire brushes that damage the internal lining.
  • Leaving the lid open or broken, letting in dust and insects.

We recommend hiring a licensed tank cleaning company with safety equipment and disinfectants intended for drinking water.

A lined concrete tank is easier to clean

The internal chemical lining gives the tank a smoother surface, so sediment does not stick easily and cleaning is quicker. That is one reason every tank we make comes waterproofed inside and out. If your old tank needs constant cleaning or has cracks, it may be time to replace it. See signs your tank needs replacing.
